The benefits of giving birth at home with an independent midwife.

There is much evidence that a planned homebirth is as safe or even safer, than giving birth in hospital. In your own familiar surroundings, you are likely to feel more relaxed, enabling labour to progress effectively. Those around you will also adjust to your needs and schedule, and you will obtain the rest and support you require, when you need it most.

Women who have hired an independent midwife to help them birth at home often comment that it gave them great confidence to know that their midwife was committed to helping them give birth the way they wanted to.

Studies of homebirths in the UK have concluded that:

Women halve the risk of caesarean section compared with hospital births.

Babies born at home are more likely to be in a very good condition at birth, resulting in a good “Apgar” Score. The Apgar score indicates a babies condition based on heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone and skin colour. For more information go to www.medicinenet.com/apgar_score/page1.htm

Mothers giving birth at home are less likely to need forceps or ventouse assistance. For information on assisted deliveries go to www.babycentre.co.uk/refcap/546719.html

In the comfort of your own home, you are able to mobilise when and where you want, and control the environment you are in You also eat and drink what you want, and have the support of your spouse and family at all times.

You will not be disturbed by hospital noises and other women in labour. Being safe and relaxed in your own surroundings is more likely to lead to a normal and natural birth.
